Documents for a cruise from Barcelona: passport, visa, EES and ETIAS

A US citizen sailing from Barcelona needs a US passport book. Spain asks for one valid at least 3 months after you leave and issued within the last 10 years, but Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Norwegian ask for 6 months after the cruise ends, so plan on that. No visa is needed for up to 90 days in any 180, and on November 4, 2026 the EU's own ETIAS site said ETIAS is not yet in operation.

If you are a US citizen, carry a US passport book that is valid for at least six months after your cruise ends and was issued within the last 10 years. You do not need a visa for Spain, and you do not need ETIAS yet. At the border, expect a photo and fingerprints instead of a passport stamp, because the EU's Entry/Exit System has replaced the stamp.

Spain's rules are the legal floor. The cruise line's rules decide whether you board, and on passport validity they are stricter.

What documents do US citizens need for a cruise from Barcelona?

A US passport book. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity list a "U.S. Passport Book" as the accepted document for US citizens sailing from European ports, and Princess says a valid passport book is required for all international itineraries, Europe included. Neither a passport card nor a birth certificate appears on those lists for European departures. You need no visa for a stay of up to 90 days.

Here is what each source asks of a US citizen, as read on November 4, 2026:

WhoWhat they ask for
European UnionA passport valid at least 3 months after the date you intend to leave the EU, issued within the last 10 years
Royal CaribbeanUS passport book, "valid at least 6 months after your cruise ends"
Celebrity CruisesUS passport book, "valid at least 6 months after your cruise ends"
NorwegianFor cruises leaving a non-US port, a passport "not expiring within six (6) months of the return of your cruise"
PrincessA valid passport book. Its FAQ adds that many countries want passports valid six months after the end of your travel
MSC CruisesMSC's page for US guests asks for passports with at least 6 months of validity on international and transatlantic sailings to or from the USA, and says guests without proper documents "will be denied boarding"

MSC also links a separate documents sheet for each itinerary, for example its Western Mediterranean sheet for winter 2026 to 2027. Read the one for your sailing.

How long does my passport need to be valid for a Barcelona cruise?

Six months after the day your cruise ends. The EU itself asks for only 3 months after you leave, plus an issue date within the last 10 years, but Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Norwegian ask for 6 months, and Princess warns that many countries do. A passport that meets the cruise line's rule meets Spain's too.

Two more details from the lines' own pages:

  • Turkey. Norwegian says passport validity of six months "is strictly enforced" in Turkish ports, and a guest whose passport expires sooner "must remain on board" there.
  • Blank pages. Princess asks you to make sure your passport has blank pages for entry and exit endorsements and any visas.

Renewing takes time, so check the expiry date before you book rather than before you pack.

Do I need a visa for a Barcelona cruise?

Not as a US or Canadian citizen on a short stay. The EU's official ETIAS site lists the United States and Canada among the visa-exempt countries, and the EU defines a short stay as up to 90 days within any 180-day period. That period is counted as one total across all the countries using the Entry/Exit System, Spain included, not country by country.

How does the 90/180-day rule work?

On any day of your trip, look back 180 days and count the days you spent in the Schengen area. The total must not exceed 90. That is how the European Commission's short-stay calculator describes it, and the Port of Barcelona's passenger page links straight to that calculator.

A week's cruise plus a few nights in Barcelona is nowhere near the limit. It matters if you add a long land trip in Europe before or after, or sail back to back. The calculator has a planning mode that works out the longest stay allowed from a future date.

What is the EES, and what happens at the border?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is the EU's automated register of non-EU travelers on short stays. It records each entry and exit at the external borders of the 29 countries that use it, Spain included, and it has replaced the passport stamp. The EU's FAQ says the system has been fully operational at all external border crossing points since April 10, 2026, and that manual stamping was abolished on that date.

What it means in practice, according to the EU's EES pages:

  • First crossing. Passport officers take a photo of your face, scan your fingerprints, or both, and your passport is not stamped. For a traveler who needs no visa, the system stores four fingerprints and a facial image.
  • Children. Fingerprints of children under 12 are not scanned.
  • Later crossings. The officer only checks your face and fingerprints against the record, which takes less time. With a biometric passport you may be able to use a self-service kiosk where one is installed.
  • Before you go. Canada's travel advice for Spain says you don't need to take any action before you travel.
  • Not everywhere. In Cyprus and Ireland, the EU says, passports are still stamped by hand.

You register at the first Schengen border you cross. Flying nonstop from the US, that is Barcelona airport. Connecting in another Schengen airport, it is there.

MSC adds a warning for cruises that reach Europe from outside it, such as an eastbound transatlantic crossing. Immigration under the EES at the first European port "can take a long time", MSC says, and it strongly recommends not booking early flights or time-sensitive transport right after arrival.

Do I need ETIAS for a Barcelona cruise?

Not yet. On November 4, 2026 the EU's official ETIAS site said "ETIAS is currently not in operation and no applications for travel authorisations are collected at this point." It gives no start date. It says the EU will announce the start date "several months prior to its launch". Until then there is nothing to apply for.

What the EU site says about ETIAS once it starts:

  • Cost. EUR 20 on the official site. Applicants under 18 or over 70 pay nothing.
  • Validity. Three years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • Where to apply. Only on the official ETIAS site or the official ETIAS app. The EU warns that other websites act as intermediaries and may charge extra fees.

Some cruise line pages are out of date on this. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity show ETIAS as "Coming Soon", and Princess's FAQ still gives a start date that passed years ago. Trust the EU's own site, and check it again a few weeks before you fly.

What about ports outside the Schengen area?

Each country sets its own entry rules, and the cruise line's documents page is where they show up. If your itinerary calls outside the Schengen area, read your line's page for every country on it. This is what we found on November 4, 2026:

CountryWhat the official or cruise line page says
United KingdomGOV.UK says that since February 25, 2026 visitors of 85 nationalities, US and Canadian citizens among them, cannot enter without an Electronic Travel Authorisation. It costs £20, allows visits of up to 6 months, and every traveler needs one, babies and children included. Norwegian says guests without one "will be denied boarding"
GibraltarNorwegian: "A visa is not required to visit Gibraltar as a port of call"
MoroccoNorwegian lists the United States and Canada among passport holders who "do not require a visa to go ashore in ports in Morocco"
TunisiaNorwegian: only Israeli passport holders need a visa to go ashore; "All other nationalities can go ashore, no visas are required"
TurkeyNorwegian: no visa is needed for any nationality on a cruise that visits Turkey as a port of call, but six months of passport validity is "strictly enforced"

The Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey and Gibraltar rows are Norwegian's statements for its own guests. We could not open a Moroccan or US government page that confirms them, so read your own line's page too. Cruises that start or end in Turkey follow different rules from a port call.

Itineraries by region are on the destination pages, and crossings to the US are covered in the transatlantic guide.

What do Canadians need for a cruise from Barcelona?

A Canadian passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the date you expect to leave the Schengen area, Canada's travel advice for Spain says. No visa is needed for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across all Schengen countries. On ETIAS, Canada's page says "Applications are not yet open", and that you should apply only through the official EU website once it launches.

Norwegian's list of visas that US and Canadian citizens must get in advance includes the UK ETA, and Princess says the same of the ETA. Plan on the lines' six-month passport rule as well.

If you hold another passport, start with the EU's list of visa-exempt countries. If you need a Schengen visa, Norwegian notes that some European itineraries need a multiple-entry visa "because the ship leaves and re-enters the Schengen Zone".

What documents do children need for a Barcelona cruise?

Each child needs their own passport, the EU says, and Spain's Ministry of the Interior says foreign minors leaving Spain must carry their own passport or a valid travel document. The UK ETA, if your cruise calls there, is needed for babies and children too. For a child traveling with one parent, a signed consent letter from the other parent is the sensible extra.

What the official and cruise line pages say about consent:

  • Spain. The signed travel permission form on the Interior Ministry's page is for Spanish children traveling without a parent. It also says border officers may inspect closely the documents of minors traveling alone or with adults who do not hold parental authority.
  • Canada. The Government of Canada recommends a signed consent letter for children traveling abroad without one or both parents. It is not a legal requirement in Canada, but foreign immigration officers may ask for it.
  • Princess. "Many foreign countries require any single parent or guardian to bring a permission slip for the minor to travel abroad."
  • Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. A guest 17 or under traveling without a legal guardian needs the accompanying adult to present a notarized guardian consent form at check-in.
  • Norwegian. A minor sailing with an adult who is not their parent or guardian needs a Parent/Guardian Consent Form, signed by both parents, handed in at the pier.

What if my passport is lost or stolen in Barcelona?

Contact the US Consulate General in Barcelona on (+34) 93 280 2227, the number the US Embassy lists for it. The Embassy's consular staff in Spain can replace a lost or stolen passport. It recommends a police report for a stolen passport but says it is not mandatory for the replacement. Any police report must be filed before you leave Spain.

In Spain, 112 is the emergency number and 091 the National Police. The Embassy also names AlertCops, a free app for reporting crimes to the police. Princess says it may keep your passport at check-in, so ask on board if you need it for a port.
