First-time cruiser FAQ for Barcelona: what to know before you fly in
Fly in the day before, take the fixed €46 taxi from the airport to the Adossat wharf, and carry a passport valid six months past the end of your cruise. Your cruise line names your terminal and your boarding time. On November 4, 2026, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian and Princess listed daily gratuities in US dollars, and MSC a hotel service charge in euros on Mediterranean sailings.

Each answer below is short and links to the guide with the detail, for a first cruise from Barcelona when you are flying in from the US or Canada.
Where a rule belongs to one cruise line, such as boarding times or gratuities, we quote that line's own page and name it. The lines do not all do the same thing, so read the rule for yours.
Which terminal does my cruise leave from in Barcelona?
Your cruise line tells you, in your documents or its app. Barcelona has six cruise terminals: five on the Adossat wharf, 2 to 3.9 km from the city, and the World Trade Center terminal on the Barcelona wharf, which the port plans to close at the end of 2026. Holland America, for one, says it names the terminal only in the week of arrival.
The port's own forecast prints a terminal letter for each ship, and our calendar shows it. More in the terminals guide.
How do I get from Barcelona airport to the cruise ship?
By taxi, most simply. The metropolitan taxi tariff fixes the fare from the airport to any terminal on the Adossat wharf at €46 a cab, with every supplement included, as published on November 4, 2026. The Aerobus, metro and train cost less but stop in the city, so you still need a taxi or the Cruise Bus shuttle for the last leg.
Some lines sell their own transfers. The airport to cruise port guide compares every option, with drive times to each terminal.
Should I fly to Barcelona the day before my cruise?
Yes. Princess says it is "strongly recommended" to arrive at least one day before your cruise if you are flying to the departure port, and Celebrity says to book a flight that reaches the port a day early so you have time to spare for delays. Princess also warns that "the ship will not wait for late-arriving guests".
A delayed flight from the US is easy to absorb with a spare day and hard without one. The flying guide covers US nonstops, the flight home and the time difference.
What documents do I need for a cruise from Barcelona?
A US passport book that is valid at least six months after your cruise ends and was issued within the last 10 years. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Norwegian set the six-month rule, which is stricter than Spain's own. US citizens need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, and on November 4, 2026 the EU's official ETIAS site said ETIAS was not yet in operation.
At the border, expect a photo and fingerprints under the EU's Entry/Exit System instead of a passport stamp. The documents guide covers Canadians, children and ports outside the Schengen area.
What time should I get to the cruise terminal in Barcelona?
At the time your line gives you, and each line sets it its own way. MSC assigns a check-in slot and says you may be denied embarkation if you arrive after it closes. Royal Caribbean asks you to arrive in the slot you chose at check-in. Norwegian, if you have not checked in online, says to arrive after 12 pm and at least two hours before departure.
What the lines' pages add, read on November 4, 2026:
- MSC. You can change the slot only during web check-in, up to 2 days before departure, and only the lead guest can. Arrive before the slot opens and you may be asked to wait outside the terminal.
- Royal Caribbean. Every guest must be checked in and on board "no later than 90 minutes prior to port operations closing", or they will not sail.
- Norwegian. You choose your arrival time during online check-in.
What happens to my luggage on embarkation day?
Follow your own line's luggage rules and tags. MSC, for example, says to hand your bags to its staff at the terminal, each labeled with your name, the ship, your cabin number and the date and port of departure. It says they reach your cabin from late afternoon to early evening, and advises keeping medicines and evening clothes in your carry-on.
Until you check in, the bags stay with you:
- No storage at the pier. Holland America's Barcelona page says "there is no luggage storage at the pier."
- Bags&Go. The luggage service the port lists stores bags for €6 a bag per day, with a €24 minimum for up to four bags, it said on November 4, 2026. It also offers to take bags to the terminal and onto the ship, so check with your line that it accepts bags handed over this way.
- Taxis. The AMB's 2026 tariff has no luggage supplement, and it says the driver must help you load and unload.
The port to city center guide has the details.
Can I see Barcelona before I board my cruise?
If you land the day before, yes. You get an afternoon and a morning, which is enough for two of the big Gaudí sights. Book before you fly: the Sagrada Família sells tickets only online, and Park Güell sells timed tickets online with a 30-minute window to enter. On sailing day itself, plan on little more than getting to the ship.
The day in Barcelona guide has three timed plans, ticket prices and the luggage options.
Where should I stay the night before a Barcelona cruise?
It depends on your terminal and your flight. Five of the six terminals are on the Adossat wharf, and no hotel in our comparison is within a 20-minute walk of one, so from any city hotel you take a taxi or the Cruise Bus. Port Vell hotels are a walk from the World Trade Center terminal, and airport hotels with free shuttles suit a late landing.
The hotels guide compares hotels in each area, with walking and driving times to the terminals.
What money do I need in Barcelona?
Euros. Spain is one of the EU countries that use the euro, the EU's own page says. Barcelona's official taxis take cash or card, the AMB says, and drivers must carry change for up to €20. Norwegian, writing about its own ports of call, suggests carrying a small amount of local currency and says cards are commonly accepted in shops and restaurants.
In our guides, taxi, bus and ticket prices are in euros as each operator prints them, with the date they were read. We do not convert them to dollars, because the exchange rate moves.
Is the onboard currency euros or US dollars?
It depends on the line, so check yours. On their own pages on November 4, 2026, Celebrity said guests are charged in US dollars, and Norwegian said its onboard currency is the US dollar. MSC said its onboard currency is the euro or the US dollar depending on the itinerary, and it prices its Mediterranean hotel service charge in euros.
Royal Caribbean and Princess list their daily gratuities in US dollars, in the table below.
How much are gratuities on a cruise from Barcelona?
Each line sets its own. On November 4, 2026, Royal Caribbean listed $18.50 per guest per day outside suites, Celebrity $19.50 for Inside, Oceanview and Veranda staterooms, Norwegian $20 for Club Balcony Suite and below, and Princess $18 for most staterooms. MSC listed a hotel service charge of 12 EUR per adult per night on Mediterranean sailings booked after July 2, 2026.
| Line | Daily charge per guest, on its own page | What else the page says |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Caribbean | $18.50 in staterooms, $21.00 in suites | Added to your SeaPass account each day unless prepaid. Optional, and you can change or remove it at Guest Relations before the morning of disembarkation. Adds 18% to drinks, specialty dining, room service and minibar, and 20% to the spa |
| Celebrity | $19.50 Inside, Oceanview and Veranda; $20.50 Concierge and AquaClass; $24.50 The Retreat | Optional, and can be adjusted or removed. Adds 20% to drinks, specialty dining, spa, room service and minibar |
| Norwegian | $20 Club Balcony Suite and below; $25 The Haven and suites | For bookings made on or after January 1, 2023, for every guest aged 3 or older. Can be prepaid up to 24 hours before sailing |
| Princess | $18 most staterooms; $19 mini suites, cabanas and Reserve Collection; $20 suites | Amounts in US dollars |
| MSC | 12 EUR adults, 10 EUR ages 2 to 17; 16 EUR and 13 EUR in the Yacht Club | Per night, for Mediterranean, Canary Islands and Northern Europe cruises booked after July 2, 2026. Earlier bookings have their own rates on the same page. No charge under 2 |
We read these five lines' pages. For any other line, read its own page before you budget.
What should I take ashore on port days?
Check your line's rules for the day ashore. Norwegian suggests carrying a small amount of local currency in foreign ports. Princess says it may keep your passport at check-in, so ask on board if you need it ashore. In Turkish ports, Norwegian says a guest whose passport expires within six months must stay on board. MSC warns that ship times can change for weather or local rules.
- Ports outside the Schengen area. The UK, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey and Gibraltar set their own entry rules, covered in the documents guide.
- Where the ships go. See Western Mediterranean cruises for the ports most sailings from Barcelona call at.
How does a one-way cruise from Barcelona work?
It starts in Barcelona and ends somewhere else, so you fly home from the last port, not from Barcelona. 643 sailings on our schedule are one-way. On November 4, 2026, the most common end ports were Civitavecchia in Italy, Piraeus in Greece and Lisbon in Portugal, and the crossings to the Americas end in places such as Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
- Book the right flight home. Check the end port before you book the return, and leave time between the ship's arrival and your flight. MSC's rule of thumb is at least five hours.
- Find where yours ends. The cruise list shows the end port of every sailing.
- Crossings. The transatlantic guide covers the sailings to the US and the Caribbean.
How do I read the fares on this site?
Each fare is a starting fare per person in US dollars, for the cheapest cabin Cruisebound listed on the day we checked, which for today's schedule is November 4, 2026. Cruisebound sells in the US and Canada, so these are fares for buyers there. The note under each fare table says what the fare includes, and on November 4, 2026 every fare included taxes and port fees.
- A starting fare is a floor. Other cabins on the same sailing cost more.
- It is not live. Fares change daily, so check the current price on Cruisebound before you book.
- Per night. Some pages also show the fare per night, which helps compare a 4-night trip with a 14-night one.
How do I find the cheapest cruise from Barcelona?
Start on the cheap cruises page, which sorts every priced sailing by total fare and by fare per night. On fares checked November 4, 2026, the lowest starting fare on our schedule is $243 per person and the lowest fare per night is $36. A short trip is cheaper to book, while a longer one can cost less for each night on board, so compare both.
- Pick the month. On fares checked November 4, 2026, typical 7-night fares were lowest in January and February 2027. The season guide has the month-by-month table.
- Sailing soon. Last-minute cruises lists the sailings leaving in the next 60 days.
- Budget for the rest. Add the flight, a hotel night, the taxi and your line's daily charge from the gratuities table above.
Do cruise passengers pay the Barcelona tourist tax?
Yes. Catalonia's tourist tax applies to cruise ships while they are moored or anchored in a Catalan port, and the cruise line collects it. In Barcelona city the total is €9.00 per person when the ship stays more than 12 hours and €11.00 when it stays 12 hours or less, on the Catalan tax agency's table read November 4, 2026. Guests aged 16 or under are exempt.
A hotel night before the cruise carries the tax too: in Barcelona city, €6.00 per person per night at a youth hostel up to €12.00 at a 5-star hotel, at the rates that run to March 31, 2027. The day in Barcelona guide has the full table.
